Nichiban Sushi

Tonight we decided to do take out at another nearby Japanese restaurant.  Nichiban Sushi is a restaurant that is located right on the border of Markham and Scarborough.  What started off as a tiny take out only sushi store has turned into a tiny restaurant as well.  The restaurant boasts fresh sushi and sashimi and can get most of their take out order food out on time.

We decided to test this theory and so we gave them one hour to make us a large sushi and sashimi platter.  A large platter contains about 85 pieces and costs about 76 dollars each.  We had called them about 5:15 pm and told them that we were going to pick it up in one hour’s time.

As we arrived at the restaurant, coming from the north requires good driving skills as making a left to the restaurant can be a little tricky entering the place.  Once we got in, the place is located in the back of the plaza.  We got their roughly in an hour’s time and the food was ready as requested.
Large Sushi and Sashimi Platter

The platter had an assortment of sushi and sashimi including salmon, butterfish, tuna and spicy salmon sashimi.  What impressed me was that it was filled right to the edge of the platter.  Again when eating sushi and raw fish, the freshness factor is a huge factor in whether this place will earn high marks or not.  I can safely say that the sushi and sashimi were quite good.  There was no mushiness like some of the other restaurants that we had order take out sushi from before.  The rice was nicely cooked and not like “bad rice” where it soft and wet tasting.  The fish was mildly cold but not to the point where there were like freezer burn on the fish.  With the big platter, they also gave us two complimentary salmon and tomato soup which was very tasty.  (sorry no picture).  The soup was like kimchi and salmon mixed together. It was a little spicy but certainly very “sweet” tasting.

All in all it was well worth the price.  A large platter was able to easily feed 4 hungry people and the soup put an exclamation to the whole meal.  The only drawback is that they don’t have some of the more exotic fishes.  The platters they have are some of the more basic fish that is out there in the market.  However having said that, it was still fresh and again it was worth the money one paid for.  For it I would give it a 4 out of 5.
