Bæjarins Beztu Pylsur

Today I shall wrap up my trip to Iceland with an unusual blog (maybe) about a hot dog stand.  This hot dog stand believe it or not was made famous when President Bill Clinton had made a quick stop over and decided to have one of the famous pylsur dogs over at Bæjarins Beztu Pylsur.  The picture is posted in the back of this booth's wall.

For those who don't know what a pylsur is, it is a famous national hot dog in Iceland.  How it is different compared to some of the hot dogs in North America is that they use  remolaði ora mayonnaise-based sauce with sweet relish, mustard, ketchup, raw and fried onions to really drive out the flavor.  The combination of those condiments makes the dog a little sweet tasting but none of the less very good. The fried onions give it a crunchiness feel that is usually not felt in a North American dog.  This stand prepares the dogs right on the spot.  They have a BBQ table beside them and a stand and stool should one choose to stand and eat and enjoy the beautiful view that the capital of Iceland has to offer.  For 300 Iceland dollars (equivalent) to about $2.75 CDN one can enjoy one of these beautiful hot dogs.  They also serve them at their airport for 400 Icelandic dollars but this hot dog stand kicks butt when compared to the one at the airport.

The place is somewhat easy to locate however one may have to have a keen eye.  It is not that big and it is somewhat tucked out of view.  They are open almost 365 days a year and almost to the wee hours of the morning.  So go out and get a pylsur.  You will not be disappointed.
