Maple Yip Seafood Restaurant

The other night we had a chance to eat out at Maple Yip Seafood Restaurant.  This restaurant is tucked behind a small strip plaza located in the south east corner of Midland Avenue and Sheppard Avenue.  Most of us wanted to do Chinese that night and were told that the winter melon soup was one of the best in the city.

We decided to order a total of 6 dishes.  In addition to the soup, we ordered quail, garlic oysters, chicken, baby bok choy and fish.

The food all arrived rather quickly.  The restaurant was full despite it being a weeknight.  We had placed reservations that night so we were seated immediately.  The winter melon soup arrived first and the waitress all gave us equal proportions.  Each bowl had a shrimp or two in it.  The soup was not bad at all.  Not too salty but not too bland, the chicken stock was perfect that night.  The melon was quite soft and well cooked.  Absolutely no complaints with the soup.

Chicken

After the soup was done, the rest of the plates arrived soon afterwards.  The chicken was juicy and tasty.  It was quite meaty and there was minimal fat on the skin.  It also came with the ginger and onion sauce which complimented the chicken well.

The quail was exceptionally good.  Usually the meat sticks to bone or is poorly overcooked, however the meat fell off the bone and the meat was juicy and not so dry.  The quail was marinated with I believe to be soya sauce only.  There was a dish of salt that also went with the quail.

The vegetables were nicely done.  There was nothing remarkable about it.  Just nice and simple with garlic sauce which made it a nice vegetable dish.  The fish was just as unremarkable as well.  It was nicely steamed and was not raw or bloody when served (which we have experienced at some other restaurants).  The fish was mixed with soya sauce which was simple yet effective.

The oysters were made with onions and garlic.  The oysters were moderate to large in size and tasted pretty fresh.  Although the only drawback was that there were small rocks or shells inside the oysters, the overall taste was not greasy at all and actually went down quite well.

Oysters

Overall it was a good experience.  Total price was well under a hundred dollars for the night.  With plenty of free parking, this restaurant offers pretty good value for the price you pay for the food.  Happy for the night, we would definitely go again in the very near future.  For this restaurant, we give this place a solid 4 out of 5.
