Restaurant Gordon Ramsay

Restaurant Gordon Ramsay located on Royal Hospital Road is a three-star Michelin restaurant.  It is where we decided to spend our second last evening in London dining at one of the world’s most famous restaurants.  The front of the restaurant is very plain and we actually had to ask a local as to the whereabouts of this place.  There is only a small sign located on the side of the door that lets you know that you are at this famous restaurant.

Once inside this “house” as I would like to call it, you are led down a dark hallway.  Inside the dining room area, there was about 12 tables altogether, 10 waiters waiting to serve you and 14 chefs inside the kitchen ready to make your food.  After getting our names we were seated at our table and served with beverages.
Artichoke Parmesan Cheese Truffle Bun
What I noticed the most was the ten waiters there were constantly moving and watching you.  Even going to the washroom garnered an escort from one of the staff members.  They were by your table and were always by your side in case you needed any assistance.

Salmon Roe Wrap with Seaweed
Tonight there were the prestige and the seasonal inspiration menus that one could choose from.  Please note that the content of these menus change periodically so what we had to choose from may be quite different from what you might get to order from.  One was more expensive than the other one so we decided to go with two of the prestige menus and two of the inspirational menus.

Quail Egg with Pudding
For appetizers, we went with the Salmon Roe Wrap with Seaweed, Quail Egg with Pudding, Green Pea Mousse with Cottage Cheese and the Artichoke Parmesan Cheese Truffle Bun.  For entrees we went with the Poached Scottish Lobster Tail with Lardo Di Colonnata, Vegetables a la Grecque and Coral Vuinaigrette, Suckling Pig, Breese Pigeon with Grilled Polenta, Smoked Ventreche, Braised Shallots and Dates, and the Deep Fried Scallops from the Isle of Skye.  For dessert, we chose the Cheese Trolley, the Mango Jasmine and Passion Fruit Juice, Agen Prune Crème Brulee, the Chocolate Cigar, Lemonade Parfait with Honey, Bergamot and Sheep’s Milk Yogurt Sorbet, and the Caramelized Tarte Tartin of Apple.

Green Pea Mousse with Cottage Cheese
We were first greeted with the Salmon Roe Wrap with Seaweed.  This delicacy was basically fresh salmon wrapped with seaweed that was topped off with a bit of red roe on top.  Many of us have had sushi before but this dish was quite different.  The fish was very fresh and the seaweed was not exactly the type of seaweed found wrapped around a piece of sushi.  It’s difficult to describe it but this dish was extremely refreshing and very tasty.  The seaweed was slightly different and not exactly the same type where we find wrapped around a piece of sushi.  The roe was nice and large and burst with flavor when biting into them.  It was definitely an excellent starter to start off the meal.

Deep Fried Scallops from the Isle of Skye
The Quail Egg with Pudding arrived next.  They were four eggs lined up beautifully in a tray and each one looked great.  I’m not a huge fan of eggs but there was no way I was going to turn down this opportunity.  As one takes a bite into this rather small egg, one doesn’t really taste much of the egg.  Most of the flavor of this dish was in my mind from a small amount pudding that contained mostly a meat sausage mix and from the fried breadcrumb that had surrounded the egg.  The entire egg almost melts in your mouth as you are chewing it making it another fantastic appetizer to start off with.

Poached Scottish Lobster Tail with Lardo Di Colonnata
The Green Pea Mousse with Cottage Cheese arrived next and that too was amazing.  The peas with the cottage cheese were blended very smoothly and were placed at the bottom of the cup.  Small amounts of fresh vegetables were then placed on top of it.  What you have here folks was a masterpiece.  This was the best salad I have ever had.  The smoothness of the mix was smoother than the texture of a pea puree in a baby food jar. Nothing else can come close to this salad.  I absolutely loved this and if all my salads were made this way, I would have no trouble eating my vegetables every day.

Suckling Pig
The Artichoke Parmesan Cheese Truffle Bun arrived next.  With a small piece of artichoke placed on top of the truffle bun, the bun although looking rather unexciting was anything but unexciting.  Adding a touch of cheese to the whole bun brought all the parts together and actually made this a very delightful bun to have.  Honestly I thought it was very creative for the chef to create such a dish.  Separately, all the ingredients of this dish were rather boring, however by putting it altogether in such a fashion, it really brought this dish out to the forefront.

Breese Pigeon with Grilled Polenta
The Lobster Tail looked great on presentation as the waiter placed it on our table.  We took a bite and I can tell you this was one of the most extraordinary pieces of lobster tail meat that I have ever eaten.  Surrounded by a Lardo Di Colonnata which incidentally is a piece of pork lard sprinkled with herb and aged for at least 6 months in white piece of marble from the Alps Mountains, this dish was virtually unreal in taste.  It provided a beautifully tasty salted lobster tail meat.  The meat was very tender and very fresh.  The saltiness of the lobster was rather different but different in a wonderful way in that it was one of the best lobster tails I had ever tasted.

Cheese Trolley
I had actually ordered the Suckling Pig as my entrée.  There were five pieces of pork on this plate, all with different ingredients and make.  The center-piece was the crispy belly.  Now I know most people especially in the Asian culture would be wondering what is so special about this piece of crispy belly and truthfully I actually don’t know the answer to that question.  The crispy piece contained a layer of soft meat underneath the crispy layer as well a small layer of fat between the crispy skin and meat and the overall taste and crispiness were comparable to the suckling pig here in Canada, I could not find a major difference between the two.  Other pieces of pork contained on this plate included the spiced shoulder sausage, the roasted pork loin on potato, the Turkish Delight and the pork cheek.  My personal favorite was actually the pork cheek.  The texture was very smooth and a little fatty however because of the softness and sponginess of the pork, it was able to absorb the sauce on this plate and made the pork extra tasty.  The other pieces were more cooked and hard and as a result, were a little bit bland compared this dish despite the surrounding sauce.

Mango Jasmine and Passion Fruit Juice
The Deep Fried Scallops were I think exactly how Chef Ramsay would love his scallops.  Nice and cooked on the inside, spongy on contact and enrich in flavor, one could not have tasted a better scallop.  There were 4 scallops nicely decorated on the plate and as which I am guessing was the cider emulsion.  It did not alter the true taste of the scallops and if anything, it actually brought out the flavor of the scallops even more.  A wonderful seafood dish to have with the scallops cooked to perfection.

The best meal of the night had to been the Breese Pigeon.  The meat on this pigeon was almost comparable to the duck two previous nights ago at Ramsay’s other restaurant.  It was soft and tender and the sauce they used was beautiful.  The smoked ventreche was basically a piece of smoke bacon but placed alongside the pigeon it really enhanced the overall dish.  The aroma of the shallots made the entire dish mouth watering.  The chefs certainly did not disappoint.  Like the duck on the previous night, this was one dish that I would not have mind have a second piece to it as it was absolutely amazing. It was in my opinion the best entrée of the 4 that we had ordered that evening.

The 5 Cheeses The Waiter Chose
By the time dessert rolled around we were all pretty full yet there was no way we were going to turn anything down. They gave us a complementary drink first which was the Mango, Jasmine and Passion fruit juice which certainly had created a wow factor in it.  The combination of all those exotic fruits all in one cup gave the drink a certain zing to it.  We were all very surprised at how juicy, how exotic yet so spine-tingling this juice was.

Chocolate Cigar
The highlight of the night was the Cheese Trolley and pending on how you look at it this could have been the highlight or the lowlight.  The waiters basically roll out a trolley that contained about 20 different kinds of cheeses.  I made the mistake in letting the waiter choose the 5 best ones because there were just too many to choose from.  The waiter said he was going to give me the 5 most popular cheeses in that region.  HAHA BIG MISTAKE!! Three of the five cheeses were outstanding however there were 2 cheeses that I would HIGHLY recommend to you never to try unless you are the most adventurous people on the planet.  The waiter placed on my plate a piece of Stinky Bishop and a piece of Brie De Meaux.  No words could describe the taste of the cheese.  Both were quite creamy in texture, the latter was crazy heavy in ammonia.  Just taking a small nibble at them was enough to make you turn blue.  The best way to describe the taste was that it was like eating a piece of cheese that had been wrapped in a stinky dirty wet sock that had been left there moist for the past month.  Enough said!!

Switching gears we had to find a dessert to offset that cheesy taste. The smoked chocolate cigar dessert was placed on our table which was dark chocolate rolled up into a cigar.  The chocolate was very sweet, maybe a touch too sweet in my mind however if you are a lover of dark chocolate, this dessert was for you.  With a small scoop of cardamom ice cream as well, this rich dessert was an absolute life saver especially right after having that cheesy dessert.

Lemonade Parfait with Honey, Bergamot and Sheep’s Milk Yogurt Sorbet
My favorite dessert of the night had to have been the Lemonade Parfait with Honey, Bergamot and Sheep’s Milk Yogurt Sorbet.  The Bergamot was thinly sliced and rolled up into a cylinder.  It was rich in an orange-tangy like taste to it and it was yummy!!  I loved the yogurt sorbet since I’m not a huge fan of yogurt but when made like this, I will certainly eat this yogurt any day.

Agen Prune Crème Brulee
The Caramelized Tarte Tartin of Apple was very similar to the apple pie I had 2 nights previous at his other restaurant.  The same type of sweet apple sauce was used to bring out the flavor of the apple.  This dish was more or less an apple tart made similarly to his apple pie.  It was very sweet and tasting and a great alternative if you didn’t want chocolate for the evening.
Caramelized Tarte Tartin of Apple
Somewhere in there, there was also a coconut soufflé mixed with chocolate sauce and a small scoop of a sorbet ice cream.  Again similar to the soufflé that was given to us 2 nights before, the soufflé was equal to its sister’s chef soufflé so no need to elaborate further other than to say, what another wonderful dessert to have.

Coconut Souffle
The final complimentary dessert of the evening was The White Chocolate and Strawberry Ice Cream Spheres mixed with Dry Ice.  Place in pot of liquid nitrogen, this ice cold dessert is one for the ages.  The ice cream is inside this pastry which is then placed in a bowl.  Nitrogen is poured in which gives it a smoky appearance and ice cold taste to it.  This was crazy amazing and a must try for any dessert loving person.

The White Chocolate and Strawberry Ice Cream Spheres mixed with Dry Ice
Overall it was a wonderful, wonderful experience.  Service was amazing all night and the head waiter even brought my friend and I into the back kitchen for a grand tour of the kitchen so we could watch the chefs make the food.  We met the sous chef for the evening and even snapped a photo with him.  Yes again it was a little pricy with the prestige menu roughly $200.00 CDN per person but who cares.  It was an experience that you will never ever forget.  Only recommendation, avoid the Stinky Bishop and you will be A-OK! Thank you to the staff at Restaurant Gordon Ramsay for having us. It was an amazing evening.  A definite 5++ out of 5 for the evening.

Gordon Ramsay at Claridge’s Restaurant

Food For Thought went overseas this past week to take part in some really good fine dining at some of the best restaurants in London and in Barcelona.  Some of these restaurants were well known, however there were others were that were from a top ten review list that was created from Trip Advisor.  All in all it was certainly a wonderful experience and something that I will remember for the rest of my life.
Chicken Liver with Foie Gras Kings Jelly
Today I will talk about my experience at Gordon Ramsay at Claridge’s Restaurant.  For those of you who don’t know, this is where it all began for this chef guru.  This is the actual restaurant where Mr. Ramsay had built his empire from.  This restaurant is located just south of Oxford Street in London and is steps from Hyde Park.

Chilled Asparagus
We made reservations to this restaurant approximately 2 months ago.  In order to go these fine dining restaurants, one needs to make these reservations well in advance.  When we got there, they immediately escorted us to our seats and offered us water, wine and champagne to start off as drinks.

Risotto with Spring Black Truffle and Aged Parmesan
They had “three” different types of menu to choose from.  They had an a la carte menu and a couple of set course/prestige menus where patrons could have a small sample of some of their best dishes.  Since we were big fans of Hell’s Kitchen and we had always wondered what a good Beef Wellington and Risotto tasted like, we opted for the a la carte menu. It was also probably the best and easiest way to share the food amongst 4 people.  For starters we went with the Lobster Ravioli, Shellfish and Salmon with Lemongrass and Chervil Veloute, and the Risotto with Spring Black Truffle and Aged Parmesan.  For the entrees, we went with the Beef Wellington and the Roast Breast and Confit Leg of Duck with Jerusalem Artichoke and Cider Glazed Foie Gras.

Lobster Ravioli, Shellfish and Salmon with Lemongrass and Chervil Veloute
As we were waiting they came by and offered us some fresh bread to eat.  They also provided us with some complimentary Chicken Liver with Foie Gras Kings Jelly and a Chilled Asparagus Drink.  The Fois gras was very good but then again when is foie gras never good.  It was fresh and the liver had a distinct but not a heavy taste to it.  It was “light” to say the least and very tiny in its proportion so that it would not affect the rest of the meal.  The chilled asparagus was surprisingly good.  Not everyone likes asparagus but even the haters had to love this dish.  Each cup had one stalk of asparagus in it but what surprised me the most was how refreshing the whole drink was.  I don’t think it contained any sugars or salts in it, as my gut feeling was that the entire drink was strictly on the asparagus alone.  It was not thick with pulp but not diluted to the point where it was watered down.  The drink was nicely chilled but not too cold.  It was a great complimentary healthy appetizer to have.

Roast Breast and Confit Leg of Duck with Jerusalem Artichoke and Cider Glazed Foie Gras
My risotto arrived next and one bite into it showed me why Gordon Ramsay’s risottos are by far the best in the world when it came to this dish.  First of all the rice itself was nice and soft.  It was not soggy but just moist enough that it kept all the juices and flavors together.  The black truffle provided a nice flavor to the risotto.  I have had risottos of this kind before in the past however the risotto would be “caked” with the truffle. This dish had just the perfect amount of truffle in it which was more than enough to provide all the taste one needed.  The cheese was sliced paper-thin which gave this dish just that extra bit of enriching flavor.

Beef Wellington
The lobster ravioli was really, really good.  I personally never like ravioli as a whole simply because it’s either too cheesy or the pasta on the outside was too think.  This one however contained a thin layer of pasta so that one can feel the texture and full taste of the lobster and not the pasta ravioli.  The lemongrass and chervil veloute sauce they used was quite amazing in itself. It was not thick and it really enhanced the entire lobster ravioli.  The sauce was basically a mushroom and onion creamy sauce however it was very smooth and not too heavy or creamy.  After finishing this ravioli, I was actually craving for more as this was the first time I genuinely tasted a very delicious ravioli.

Apple Pie
Needless to say, the entrees arrived next.  The Beef Wellington arrived and the waiter actually slices the meat right in front of you.  I wanted the meat to be medium rare and guess what, the chef delivered.  No Hell’s Kitchen moment here that’s for sure.  It was perfectly pink on the inside and nicely cooked on the outside. Alongside its own gravy sauce, this dish was everything one can ask for.  Although the pastry on the outside was perfect, I personally would have preferred a thinner layer of bread.  The chef however did no wrong, as that is just my own preference.  The meal also came with a very creamy mashed potato and some vegetables as well.

Souffle
Oddly enough the Roast Breast and Confit Leg of Duck with Jerusalem Artichoke and Cider Glazed Foie Gras was my personal favorite.  Although the Beef Wellington is Gordon Ramsay’s signature dish, the duck was absolutely amazing!!  I truly loved this dish.  The meal came with 5 slices of duck however the foie gras was the talk of town as it literally melted in one’s mouth.  I have had duck at other restaurants before and this was incomparable.  This soft meat of the duck was in a league of its own to the point where I thought it was even better than the beef that night.  The duck was thinly sliced and perfectly cooked.  If I had to put a recommendation out there for a meat dish I would choose the duck over the beef.

Dessert
For dessert we went with the soufflé, an apple pie and ice cream special.  The apple pie was awesome.  It was very sweet and rather than having the apple inside the pastry, the large chunks of apple were situated on top.  It was a rather large piece of apple pie as I think there were about 10 cubic pieces of apple on the top.  The soufflé and the ice cream were also very good.  I unfortunately was too full to have any more but I did have a spoonful of the soufflé which was perfect.  The dessert part of the meal really filled me up.  The waiters also presented us with a complimentary chocolate dessert which too was also very, very good.

Complimentary Chocolate Dessert
Overall, it was a decent night.  As I mentioned before, the foie gras duck far exceeded expectations while the Beef Wellington was satisfactory.  Service was satisfactory although there were a couple of times I would end up pouring my own water and would irritate the waiters as they believe that it was their duty.  So seeing what I was doing, they decided to place the water behind our table so that it was out of reach.  Being my first time at any of Gordon Ramsay’s restaurants this was quite an experience.  While this was a 1-star Michelin restaurant, I was anxious to find out what his 3-star Michelin restaurant was like.  For that I will give you my take on my next posting.  Tonight’s meal was approximately $150.00 per person for those who were wondering. A little pricey but it is what it is.  Overall I give it a 4.75 out of 5.

The Royal Chinese Restaurant

A restaurant that we dine quite often and order take out from is The Royal Chinese Restaurant.  It use to be located near the railroad tracks however due to track expansion, they had recently moved to a new location located a couple of blocks west of the tracks.

Although I don’t usually do takeouts on my blog, I think it would be a disservice not to mention these guys as we eat there quite or order take-out from them quite often.

Tonight we went with their signature Spicy clams, Ox’s Tail, Salted fish and diced chicken rice, Tong Choy in Fermented Bean Curd, Fried Rice Noodles with Beef and a Pork Neck Meat and Mushroom Vegetable.

Ox's Tail
The spicy clams at this place are pretty much their signature dish.  I have to admit back in the days, this dish was much more spicier and even though it is more tamer, the clams are still quite delicious.  They also sprinkle some grounded up meat (I believe it’s beef) to make it a “meaty” dish.  Truthfully it was kind of hard to eat this dish on its own as it’s too spicy and salty so we usually eat it with a bowl of white rice.

However if you don’t like white rice, the salted fish and diced chicken is an attractive alternative.  The saltiness of the fish eliminates the blandness of the rice.  The chicken provides just the perfect amount of small protein in this dish.  Here at this place, they sure know how to make a tasty rice dish.
Spicy clams
The Tong Choy in Fermented Bean Curd served as our main vegetable in for the evening.  For those who are worried about salt levels and spiciness may want to avoid this dish.  Since they use fermented bean curd as the main spice or sauce, it is sure to add a bit of kick to the vegetables.  However if you are into the spices, this is one vegetable that one should go for.
The Tong Choy in Fermented Bean Curd

Not everyone was into rice so we got a noodle as well that evening.  An order of Fried Rice Noodles with beef was also ordered that night and proved to be a great choice.  The beef in the noodles were nice and soft and there was just the perfect amount of soya sauce in the noodles.  It was not overly fried and therefore the noodles were not completely dry.  Although many restaurants serve the same dish, these guys sure not how to make so that one is going for more afterwards.

Soft Pork Neck Meat and Mushroom Vegetable
The last two things we ordered were side dishes.  One was the Soft Pork Neck Meat and Mushroom Vegetable dish while the other was the Ox’s Tail.  The ox’s tail is not quite the tail part but the rump.  The dish is made with a beautiful gravy type beef sauce and mixed with some rather large green onions.  Although it was not one of my favorite dishes, it certainly was still quite good. The Pig Neck Meat was delicious.  The meat was soft and tender.  Mixed with a little garlic and mushrooms, one could say this was one of the more purer dishes on their menu.  I actually loved this side dish as it complimented the rest of the dishes very nicely.

This restaurant is highly inexpensive as the meal was roughly $17/person.  For the quality and the authenticity of the food, that price is more than reasonable for any one individual.  They also serve a complimentary soup whether you order take out or dine in.  With lots of free parking, I would highly recommend making reservations or get there early as they are busy seven days a week.  Overall I would give them a 4 out of 5.

Rusty's at Blue restaurant

Food for Thought went out of town recently up to Blue Mountain, Ontario to take part in some outdoor activities.  We stayed in at one of the inns near the resort and decided to dine in at Rusty’s at Blue Restaurant which was located right inside the village.  Despite it being on a busy weekend, we were able to make reservations and were able to get our seats on time despite having a group of ten there that evening.  After a quick glance at the menu, my family and I went with the Full Rack of Rusty’s Ribs while my wife went with the Fire Grilled Atlantic Salmon.
Full Rack of Rusty’s Ribs
All the food arrived at the same time despite being such a big group.  There were about 2 racks of ribs on my plate.  I also had side orders of French Fries, coleslaw and steam vegetables to go with my ribs.  They used a special BBQ sauce to marinate the ribs and that was quite evident on the meat.  The meat itself was a little over-cooked that evening.  Where some places would have the meat fall right off the bone, the meat was actually quite stuck to the bones. Although the BBQ sauce was satisfactory, the meat was unfortunately a little bit chewier than we would have liked.  A little bit of cutting was required in order to separate the meat from the bone.  The exterior of the second rack was burnt pretty good and was not actually edible. The fries were satisfactory however I was told one could have had this substituted for sweet potato fries which might have made this a more decent meal.  The vegetables were simply steamed and no extra additives were added to enlighten their flavor.

The salmon arrived on a layer of mashed potatoes which together was situated on top of some steamed vegetables.  I found the salmon to be a tad bit dry although one could argue that that is what a grilled salmon is.  For me, I prefer the inside of the salmon just a little bit softer and juicier to give it that bit of contrast.  The salmon in this case just felt over-grilled and dry overall.  The mash potatoes were decent as were the vegetables.

Fire Grilled Atlantic Salmon
Overall it was so-so dinner.  They even had troubles switching the channels on many of the televisions in the room.  It took the waitress about 40 minutes to switch to the hockey game that evening.  Some people at our table couldn’t even watch the game where others had to watch it through the reflection of a mirror.  With Collingwood being ten minutes from the mountains and with plenty of options to choose from, it might not have been such a bad idea to head into town and try something from there.  For $24.95 and $21.95, I would have expected the food to be better than what was presented.  Overall I would give it a 2.75 out of 5.

Shangri-La Banquet Hall

Although I have been to this place for numerous weddings in the past, this was actually my first time attending Shangri-La Banquet Hall for dim sum.  Located in the heart of Markham, this banquet hall has been in existence for at least ten years hosting various events including weddings and special engagements.
Rice Noodle
The place was about three-quarters full when we got there.  As we sat down, we chose our dim sum on a piece of paper and passed it over to the waiter.  There were no carts being pushed at this place.  We ordered about 16 items and as in the past, I will only highlight the best and worse of the dim sums as it would be impossible for me to go through each and every dim sum that we had ordered.

Deep Fried Dumpling Pork

Siu Mai with Conpoy
For starters, the one main dish this place is known for is the Spy Cuttle Fish.  This dish consists of spicy squid tentacles that are lightly deep fried in a batter.  The tentacles were unfortunately a bit chewy.  They were a little cold as well and it was a little hard to grasp the true taste of this dish.  Although it was classified as a specialty dish, I personally didn't really find anything special about it.

Shrimp Dumplings
My personal favorite was the Shrimp Turnip Cake.  At most other dim sum places, the turnip cake is often fried.  However this came like a pudding in a bowl.  The texture was similar to a very smooth mash potato.  It was actually quite good and one can certainly get a good taste of the shrimp mixed with the turnip.
Bean Curd Vegetable
Another dish I found it to be above average was the Deep Fried Dumpling Pork.  The four dumplings came in their unique plate that had a spot for each one.  They were not overly greasy which was pretty good and all four were nicely fried.  The pork on the inside hit all the right spots. As well, the skin of the dumpling was not overly thick and was well proportion with the amount of pork on the inside.
Ribs Honey
Another dish that I will give a fair shake was the Beef Tripe with Ginger.  The tripe was nice and tender and it was well marinated where the sauce melded well with the tripe.

Shrimp Turnip Cake
We had also ordered Shrimp Dumplings, the Siu Mais with Conpoy, Dumplings with Cordyceps, Rice Rolls, Egg Yolk Tart and Bean Curd Vegetable to name a few. However the food here was not bad but not great either.  For the price they charged per item I was expecting it to be more fancier, tastier or more unique.  I certainly did not get that feeling with the majority of the dishes. The average price for each dim sum dish was like 4 to 5 dollars.  I think that for such a grand place their dim sums need to kick it up a notch and have a certain uniqueness to them.  Otherwise I would give this place no more than a 3 out of 5.
